What is the Western Australian Curriculum?

The Western Australian Curriculum is the curriculum set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), the Western Australian Government certification authority responsible for setting the curriculum for over 1,100 schools from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Reporting directly to the Western Australian Minister for Education and Training, the SCSA is administered by a board of educators with experience in curriculum and assessment from early childhood to post-graduate university level.

The curriculum is designed by experienced educators who use evidence gathered from teachers working in Western Australian schools, and is validated by university-based academics, curriculum specialists, and measurement experts. The SCSA also conducts regular quality reviews to ensure the curriculum remains relevant and focused on students, their learning needs and aspirations.

Additionally, the SCSA has extended its curriculum programs internationally, licensing schools in various countries to deliver the Western Australian Curriculum — providing students with access to a range of post-school study and work options.

Why the Western Australian Curriculum?

A government-backed, globally recognised international curriculum offering a compelling alternative to IB.

Schools should implement the Western Australian Curriculum because it is a government-developed, globally recognised curriculum that ensures quality and credibility. It is culturally responsive, integrates local requirements, and is supported by strong quality assurance processes.

The curriculum focuses on continuous assessment rather than exams, goes beyond rote learning by integrating knowledge, skills and behaviours, and is inclusive of diverse learners. It provides effective pathways to tertiary study and is backed by strong partnerships, offering schools and teachers ongoing professional support, resources, and international opportunities.

Will I receive a senior secondary certificate that is globally recognised?

Students who successfully complete the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) programs receive the WACE, Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA) , and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

The certification is recognised for entry to leading universities around the world, including in Australia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Europe, Malaysia, and around the world.
